for Research and Service in the Cornerstone Preschool Method

The Cornerstone Method of Reflective Network Therapy is a form of psychoanalysis applied in a therapeutic classroom. It involves a synergy between dynamic treatment and education, as well as parent guidance, creating a psychoanalytic orchestrated network of therapeutic influences on disturbed children. Results have now been followed for as long as 37 years. …The IPA's Fellow conducting the Buenos Aires Cornerstone project will augment an applied psychoanalysis research database as well as provide an important clinical and educational contribution to the treatment of disturbed and/or developmentally disordered young children in Buenos Aires. A particular emphasis of the outcome study will be on combinations of cognitive growth and global clinical changes, as measured by changes in Intelligence Quotients and Children's Global Assessment Scores. …

Family Services of King County http://www.family-services.org Family Services of King County, the newest Cornerstone service site, is treating homeless children right in their Seattle classrooms using the Cornerstone Method of Reflective Network Therapy as well as a derivative: the psychoanalytically informed Personal Life History Book Method (PLHB). The original PLHB was adapted as My Personal Life Story About Being Homeless for this service site. Fourteen teachers and mental health professionals have already received their initial intensive 4-day training which included classroom demonstration of the method with child patients living in the current facility. In 2009, Family Services plans to address the needs of behaviorally challenged preschoolers in the community who are not homeless but whose parents are interested in this evidence-based enrichment for their emotionally and developmentally disturbed children. Family Services partnered with The Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute as well as The Children’s Psychological Health Center to create this enrichment to their already impressive and successful services which include: helping homeless families find safe, permanent homes, providing mental health support for individuals, helping abusive men learn new behaviors to end domestic violence. We are grateful for the enthusiasm and dedication of Family Services staff who continue to receive remote training and supervision via video conferencing and ongoing periodic on-site visits from CPHC senior staff. Cornerstone Argentina www.cornerstoneargentina.org Alicia Asman Mallo, MD, child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst , directs “Cornerstone Argentina” in Buenos Aires. She has been trained in the Cornerstone Method of Reflective Network Therapy and collaborates in review of her treatment videos, and provides assessment of her treatment outcomes to the Children’s Psychological Health Center. Using Reflective Network Therapy, Dr. Mallo directs “Cornerstone Argentina” for severely disturbed preschoolers in Buenos Aires. This therapeutic preschool has had a population of over a dozen very severely autistic and retarded children, currently serving ten children five part-days a week.They children are often so developmentally delayed or regressed that they cannot be IQ tested. Dr. Mallo recently reported IQ progress for those who could be tested and noted that she is now receiving referrals of children who are or who become testable by IQ. Dr. Mallo reports significant mental health gains for twice-tested child patients treated by using the standard Children’s Global Assessment measure as well as rises in IQ. A grant from IPA supports this Cornerstone service site. Dr. Mallo is frequently asked to present the Cornerstone Method and discuss her positive clinical results at professional meetings and conferences. The Cornerstone Method of Reflective Network Therapy is practiced in our service site at the Ann Martin Center in Piedmont, California. [The Ann Martin Center is a nonprofit community organization providing psychotherapy, educational therapy and psychological and educational testing. The Center is distinguished by its emphasis on both emotional and educational support.] In "A Cornerstone Conversation" (DVD available upon request) Linda Hirshfeld, PhD talks about clinical improvements and strong results in development including IQ rises among the children she works with as the therapist at this service site. Two of the children in her experience using Reflective Network Therapy who had selective mutism and serious developmental delays recovered from their selective mutism very quickly during Reflective Network Therapy sessions; one of these children recovered during the debriefing following a single therapy session. Ann Martin Cornerstone has become a valuable demonstration laboratory for mental health professionals who visit to see The Cornerstone Method of Reflective Network Therapy in action. Forensic child psychiatric help has not been provided by The Children’s Psychological Health Center since 2004, when the agency and the CPHC Board decided to focus its mission on research, training and service in the Cornerstone Method of Reflective Network Therapy. Gilbert Kliman, MD continues to provide forensic child psychiatry testimony and comprehensive forensic services as part of an interdisciplinary team focused on children's civil litigation issues.
